MATSUBAYASHI SHORIN-RYU KARATE

Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu Karate is a traditional style of Okinawan karate founded in 1947 by Shoshin Nagamine. Rooted in the principles of self-defense, discipline, and personal growth, it is one of the major branches of Shorin-Ryu karate. The style reflects the rich cultural and martial heritage of Okinawa, blending techniques from Chinese martial arts with indigenous Okinawan fighting systems. Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu emphasizes fluid movements, natural stances, and speed over brute strength, making it suitable for practitioners of all ages and body types.

The name "Matsubayashi" translates to "Pine Forest," honoring two influential martial artists, Kosaku Matsumora and Anko Itosu, whose teachings deeply influenced Nagamine. The style incorporates 18 traditional kata (forms) that serve as the foundation for training. These kata are designed to develop precise techniques, mental focus, and the ability to respond effectively to various combat scenarios. Each kata is rich with practical self-defense applications (bunkai), allowing students to explore the depth of their movements.

A unique feature of Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu is its emphasis on natural body mechanics and efficient techniques. The style avoids rigid postures and excessive tension, instead promoting relaxed, flowing motions that maximize speed and agility. This philosophy is encapsulated in its light, dynamic footwork and the swift delivery of strikes, blocks, and counterattacks. The practice fosters not only physical development but also mental clarity, humility, and respect, which are central tenets of karate-do, the way of karate.

Beyond its technical aspects, Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu embodies a deeper philosophy of self-mastery and harmony. Shoshin Nagamine believed that karate was a way to cultivate character and contribute to peace, often stating that the ultimate goal of martial arts is the perfection of the self. Today, his legacy continues in dojos worldwide, where practitioners honor his teachings and strive to uphold the traditions of this time-honored art.

Just like the rent, class fee's are due by the first of every month!  The cost is a set amount every month based on the cost of the facility and is not based on ones attendance.  Classes are still oporating even if you are unable to attend or chose not to.  Students that attend classes regularly and maintain an at home practice regime, excel the fastest.  It is up to you, to dedicate yourself and make the equipment and class fee's worth your time and money!

A class fee is often misconstrued as the student paying for the art, when in actuality, the art is free.  One could never afford to pay for the time and experienced given and received by the Sifu or other instuctors.  The Student pays for the lights and roof.  Everyone must pay and respectfully pay on time.  This is a great show of respect and support for your club, your kung fu family, your Sifu, and yourself!
